He started with docks — specifically, steel docks — as a more sustainable alternative to traditional crib docks, which were causing growing environmental concerns. Working with engineers, he developed designs that were fish-friendly and minimally disruptive to lakebeds. His work gained recognition from the Ministry of Natural Resources, which even shared his pamphlet as a model solution.
In 1992, Hugh built his first two-storey boathouse on Arma Island. That project led to more work on Muskoka’s islands, which he knew well from his upbringing on Sugarloaf. Over time, he earned a reputation as an island specialist, developing full family compounds throughout the Muskoka Lakes region. As his work expanded, he transitioned into full turnkey cottage construction and founded Forest Hill Fine Homes — a name originally inspired by his earlier life in Toronto, now realized in Muskoka.
Forest Hill has grown into a team known for speed, precision, and environmental care. From dock installations to large-scale custom builds, the company manages every aspect of the construction process — supported by its own fleet of barges and specialized equipment. Their deep expertise in steel construction remains a defining feature.
Now, with more than 35 years in the region, Hugh is proud to see his two sons stepping into the business. He remains actively involved, continuing a legacy built on quality, environmental respect, and timeless craftsmanship.
